A duty of care

This video explores the consequences of inaction. Whilst watching, think about how you would deal with the issues raised.

Are you confident that any issues would be taken seriously in your organisation?

In an organisation where safeguarding is taken seriously learners are always believed, whatever their reputation. If there is a sense in an organisation that safeguarding does not apply and it 'could never happen here', then potential issues go unresolved and the organisation is not meeting its responsibilities.

It is always better for an organistion to spend time investigating an allegation that turns out to be unfounded, than do nothing and regret not taking appropriate action.

The next question asks you to consider how the culture in your organisation could be improved to prevent the situation outlined in the video.

What could your organisation do to prevent situations where learners are not taken seriously happening?

Being vigilant means always being aware that safeguarding issues could arise. Not listening to learners' concerns could lead to wider consequences for the organisation:

  • If learners are not taken seriously, they will be less likely to disclose abuse - meaning more abuse could go undetected.
  • The reputation of the organisation could suffer.
  • Learners, staff and other community members may lose trust in the organisation being able to provide a safer learning environment.

Compare what you have written in response to these questions with the notes you made after the video in screen 3. What can you learn about how to improve your organisation's safeguarding culture?
