Introduction and Context

Reducing abuse

As explored in the previous unit, abuse can take many forms. Sadly, there will always be abusers who will find ways to overcome barriers and break down resistance.

Effective safeguarding policies, procedures and systems, including safer recruitment, are there to protect learners from potential harm. They will contribute to a safer learning environment in which learners are supported and can focus on achieving their potential.

There are many reasons why victims of abuse may not tell anyone about what is going on. These can include:

  • Threats.
  • Fear of punishment.
  • Guilt and shame.
  • A lack of opportunity to be heard or believed.
  • Inability to communicate.
