The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)

On 1 December 2012, CRB merged with the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) to become the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

The DBS was established under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 and provides a joined up service to combine the criminal records and barring functions. Employers have a legal duty to refer relevant information to the DBS.

DBS checks

DBS checks are now available as the following checks:

  • Standard.
  • Enhanced.
  • Enhanced with Barred list check. (Child)
  • Enhanced with Barred list check. (Adult)
  • Enhanced with Barred list check. (Child & Adult)

Barred list

The Barred lists are managed by the DBS Barring team and decision relating to barring will be their responsibility.

Details relating to barring will be added to the relevant Enhanced checks and linked to the type of regulated activity an individual is engaged in.

Regulated activity

A short statement that highlights an organisation's approach to creating a safer learning environment.

Samaritans A confidential telephone or email listening service if you need to talk about your own experiences.

SupportLine Offers confidential emotional support by telephone, email and post, working to help develop healthy and positive coping strategies. They also keep details of counsellors, agencies and support groups throughout the UK.

Help for Adult Victims of Child Abuse (HAVOCA) Provides support, friendship and advice for any adult whose life has been affected by childhood abuse.
