Terms used

There are a number of terms used frequently throughout this course. These appear in the glossary, and some of the key terms are defined below.

Learners refers to all students and trainees in the FE and Skills sector, including but not limited to:

  • Full and part time students.
  • Learners both above and below the age of 18.
  • Learners on alternative curricula, or on 14-19 courses.
  • Learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.

From the 10th September 2012 the term 'vulnerable adult' is no longer used. Instead the focus is on the six categories within the new definition of Regulated Activity.

SupportLine Offers confidential emotional support by telephone, email and post, working to help develop healthy and positive coping strategies. They also keep details of counsellors, agencies and support groups throughout the UK.

Help for Adult Victims of Child Abuse (HAVOCA) Provides support, friendship and advice for any adult whose life has been affected by childhood abuse.
