The stages of the safer recruitment process should be undertaken in a sensible order. Put the ten stages opposite in the order that you think is best.

    It is vital that the safer recruitment process is carefully planned to ensure all stages are completed effectively. However, there is some flexibility in how the stages are completed, particularly stages 6 and 7. The recommended order is:

    1. Plan recruitment process.
    2. Agree selection methods or interview process.
    3. Advertise vacancy.
    4. Scrutinise applications.
    5. Compile shortlist.
    6. Invite candidates to interview.
    7. Seek references.
    8. Conduct interviews and verify identity documents.
    9. Make conditional offer of appointment subject to satisfactory outcome of checks.
    10. Carry out pre-employment checks.
