There are signs to look out for that may suggest that a learner is being abused. The video on this screen will help you think about some of these possible indicators.

What signs might indicate a potential issue for Mariam? Could there be an innocent explanation?

A change in usual behaviour. Mariam is known by everyone to be outgoing and cheerful, so this change in how she acts at college may be cause for concern.

This could be an indicator of bullying or other abuse, but there may be other valid reasons for the change in Mariam. It is important not to make assumptions. Signs of abuse are often not in isolation - a change in behaviour could reinforce other indicators.

What signs might indicate a potential issue for Darren? Could there be an innocent explanation?

Unexplained injuries. Darren's bruises may be a cause for concern, particularly because of where they are - bruises around the midriff are not typical footballing injuries.

This could be an indicator of physical abuse, but there may be other valid reasons for Darren's bruises. It is important not to make assumptions. Signs of abuse are often not in isolation - has Darren's behaviour changed or anything else been noticed?

What signs might indicate a potential issue for Kemal? Could there be an innocent explanation?

Change in interest and behaviour. It is unlike Kemal to suddenly show less interest in college, be absent and not achieve good grades.

This could be an indicator of bullying or other abuse, but there may be other valid reasons for Kemal's behaviour - he might have problems at home, or he may be unwell. It is important not to make assumptions. Signs of abuse are often not in isolation - a change in behaviour could reinforce other indicators.
