Prevent for Leaders and Managers

Pastoral and curriculum provision

All institutions have a duty of care to students. It is an expectation of the Prevent duty that all institutions will have sufficient pastoral care and support available for all students.

Leaders and managers should also ensure that the Prevent duty and British values are supported through pastoral provision.

This includes challenging 'Vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values and calls for the death of members of our armed forces, whether in this country or overseas'.

They must promote British values: 'Democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs'.

The Prevent duty could be integrated into the pastoral programme and system by:

  • Using student elections and the promotion of registration to vote by 18+ year olds to allow them to discuss democracy
  • Discussing rules your organisation has and legal requirements which apply to providers and workplaces to find opportunities to staff to discuss the rule of law
  • Discussing career and educational opportunities to enable staff to discuss individual freedom
  • Providing positive encouragement to students to engage in activism and politics but avoid extremism.

  • Supporting a positive environment to discuss challenging and current issues with students
  • Supporting staff to develop critical thinking approaches to all their teaching
  • Discussing the provider's rules and how these support a good working and learning environment
  • Discussing laws which apply to all of us in Britain eg speed limits, laws relating to drugs and discussing why and how rules and laws are decided upon

Overall, exemplify mutual respect and tolerance through the pastoral programme as staff will be complying with the Equality Act [2010]
